Founded in 1983 by local musicians, The Gainesville Orchestra began as a 34-member ensemble under its first Music Director, Raymond Chobaz. Early successes and growing leadership, including the arrival of Evans Haile in 2001, and introducing the Youth Concert and expanded youth and family programming, helped establish a strong foundation for artistic and educational outreach. Continued growth, expanded collaborations, and acclaimed musical leadership have guided the organization’s evolution into the region’s full symphony orchestra.

A Legacy in Harmony

From its first performance in 1983, The Gainesville Orchestra has remained committed to enriching North Florida through performances, education, and community engagement. The creation of the Youth Concert Series in 1989 strengthened its mission to inspire young audiences and provide meaningful access to the arts. By collaborating with museums, planetariums, and university programs, the orchestra continues to foster curiosity, encourage discovery, and celebrate the power of live music. Our purpose is to bring people together through artistic excellence and to support a thriving cultural landscape for every generation.

Our Vision for the Future

The Gainesville Orchestra carries forward a legacy shaped by its founding musicians, the leadership of Raymond Chobaz, and the arrival of Maestro Evans Haile in 2001, whose international experience elevated both the quality and reputation of the ensemble. Over the years, the orchestra has created innovative performances that pair music with science, art, and technology, including collaborations with The Florida Museum of Natural History, The Harn Museum of Art, the Santa Fe Planetarium, and the astronomy community. These efforts include the celebrated Celestial Celebrations featuring Holst’s The Planets with synchronized images from the Hubble Telescope and multiple sold-out youth performances that welcomed more than 1,700 students and teachers. After expanding its repertoire beyond chamber literature, the organization officially became The Gainesville Orchestra in 2013 to reflect its broader artistic role. Looking ahead, we remain dedicated to presenting exceptional concerts, strengthening community partnerships, expanding educational outreach, and continuing to enrich the cultural life of North Florida for decades to come.
